loaded mixer + steer blow out = not good

Post by xcessiveforce52 on Sun 31 Jan 2010, 13:15

Was dispatched to a overturned loaded mixer on the T/PIke today and knowing that RISC would be activated we really had to hussle to get there. Upon arrival we found the mixer laid over on the jersey wall , it had a steer blow out and caused it to loose control. Good thing for the jersey wall if not it would had ended up into uncoming traffic. This was not my prefered method of execution or my nicest work but was pressed for set up time since we could see the RISC wrecker pulling up. Mins after we arrived and spoke to the Authorities the RISC wrecker arrived. Ofcourse the RISC driver had his say with the Trooper on scene which inturn came over to me and told me to stand down that RISC was on scene. I obviously was not just going to pack up and go so after a few words it was deemed OUR SCENE. I would have preferred to set up the tator on the high side for a reverse roll , working in the emergency lane and setting up the 50t on the front end of the casualty also in the emergency lane (opposite side of road) . This would have kept ALL lanes open while the recovery , but telling the trooper that I was going to go down and return from the opposite side might have changed the scenario since the RISC guys were breathing down there backs . All in all it got handled with NO MISHAPS and from the time to proceed was given to the time all lanes were open was 42mins. I dont like how the sling slid to one end of the triangle as it centered itself but the casualty was on the way up and I did not want to set it back down. Once upright and off the travel lanes the casualty had to be secured while the tireman replaced a wheel / tire on the rear tandems.
